Facebook

I don’t really like social networking sites. I used Orkut for a little while and I didn’t really “get it”. I saw the mess that was MySpace. Orkut ended up being taken over by Brazilian drug lords or something.

I am on LinkedIn, though. And it seems low-key and very simple. No one trying to bug you all the time. Every so often, I meet someone on there I work with and I link to them. I think the total business design of the site keeps the annoyances to a minimum. It’s all professional.

I went to a friends 50th birthday this past weekend, and I found out that lots of my old friends are using Facebook to keep in touch. I suppose that I’m not a very sentimental person in some respects, but these are people I grew up with and I enjoyed seeing them again. So, I guess I’m on Facebook now.

For better or worse.

Moblogging

I miss taking photos and posting them on this site. Cingular (now AT&T) seems to block all MMS messages to my mail accounts now.

It’s Hot

Good old North Carolina summer is here. Humidity, thunderstorms, and lots of heat. I try to be conservative with the air conditioning, but I still appreciate it a great deal. And the recent addition of a ceiling fan in my computer room helps keep it feeling a little cooler than it is upstairs. I still think North Carolina is one of the nicest places to live. Never too hot, or too cold, for my tastes.

It ain’t over till someone gets electrocuted

I’m so close to being done moving into my new place, I can almost taste it.

Aside from being sore, tired, sweaty, and up to my neck in boxes; things have been ok. My friend Lou, after a pretty long day of helping me move, almost managed to electrocute himself helping me hook up the dryer. It was a good sign to call it quits for the day. Today I picked up a few last things from my old place (on of many trips this week) and my local server was in the pile. When I turned it on, it almost blew up. Another trip to the fuse box. Fifteen amps doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s enough to send you to the hospital mostly dead.

Thankfully, I do have some very good friends and family who were good sports about lifting everything I own and carting it to the next town over. Lou, Arno, Stone, Nitin, Listener, Jeremy, Seth, Kelley, my mom, my dad, Skye, and Devilstick (I hope I didn’t leave anyone out). Listener really helped my getting pizza and picking up a missing dryer component from the old place. She also helped me make several errands the days before to make sure we had drinks in the fridge. Lou helped me out a lot by picking up a new power adapter for the dryer from the hardware store. Arno (and his wife and daughter) helped me pick up and drop off the moving van. And last, but not least, Devilstick showed up when most of us were low on energy and helped us get the TV, washer, and dryer into the house.

Also, thanks to Triluna and RangerRick for giving me boxes and wrapping paper. I used them all and it sure made things easier on my glasses and plates.

Moving is hard work

I don’t like packing up everything I own. I have a lot of stuff and most of it is heavy. I also use some of it every day and that stuff can never be put in a box.

Dirty Jobs

One television show I try not to miss is Dirty Jobs. It’s pretty simple in that the host basically visits people with “dirty” jobs and participates. Mike Rowe is this intrepid host and he really goes all out to get into the jobs, even if he knows abosultely nothing about the profession. This is what TV should be like. Intelligent, witty, and fun, all without taking itself seriously.

iBook vs. Inspiron

My (super smart and very sexy) girlfriend returned my iBook to me. I have been lugging it around with my Dell Inspiron 9300, which I purchased as my primary gaming system last year. The two laptops are totally different animals and I hadn’t really grasped that until I broke out the iBook and started to use it at work.

The Inspiron is a 17″ widescreen desktop replacement. It has power and speed. I can play EVE or BF2 on it with no problems and it looks and runs great. But, I can’t pop it out of my backpack and work on it for an hour or so and then put it up without busting out the power adapter and finding some room to clear off my desk. The two laptops represent two opposite ends of the laptop spectrum, yet they both have some kind of attractive quality that I enjoy. The iBook is simple and polished in every detail. From the physical design to the operating system (OS X). The Inspiron is like some kind of container for a giant screen and a video card, caged in a plastic shell so I can actually take it places. If the iBook were Face from the A-Team, the Inspiron would be B.A.

Something new

I don’t look on some calendar and see that it’s about time to update something like WordPress. Usually, I am sitting in front of my computer, wondering what to do. In this case, I was thinking about how nice it would be to make updates to this page, possibly with photos, from my cell phone. My phone can do e-mail and all that, and the WordPress 1.5 e-mail support was minimalistic at best. WordPress 2.0 hasn’t made any progress there.

At least my web page looks better. That’s a good start.

Nothing new

No new updates. Free Range Action Gaming is slowly, very slowly, getting back on track towards another LAN party. I have another job now working at a small development company. I’ve been playing EVE Online and Battlefield 2.

So there.
